Overview: What is Youth Mental Health First Aid?

Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training programme, designed to teach people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis.

If you work with young people in any type of environment then this is the course for you. Whether you are a teacher, a nurse, a football coach, social worker, policeman, youth work, dinner lady or any role interacting with young people will learn lots from this programme which will help you in your role.

Completing the two day course qualifies you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider.

Youth Mental Health First Aiders will have:

  • An in-depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect well being
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgmental listening
  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support whether that’s through self-help sites, school, the NHS, or a mix and engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate
  • Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive
  • Tools to look after your own mental well being

The course is delivered in four manageable chunks over 2 consecutive days:

1. About mental health Depression and anxiety

2. Suicide and psychosis

3. Self-harm

4. Eating disorders

It focuses on the issues faced by children and young people today, such as cyber bullying and substance misuse, and teaches how to promote protective factors and good parenting. Everyone who completes the course gets a Youth MHFA manual to refer to whenever they need it, and a certificate to say they are a Youth Mental Health First Aider.

What to expect on the training days:

Numbers are strictly limited to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and support them throughout their learning. Learning takes place across the four sessions delivered through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions, each session is built around a Youth Mental Health First Aid action plan.

When you complete the course you will get:

1. A Youth MHFA manual to refer to whenever you need it

2. A workbook including some helpful tools to support your own mental health

3. A certificate of attendance to say you are a Youth Mental Health First Aider

  • Cancellations between 14 & 27 days prior to the workshop will receive a 25% refund
  • Any cancellations within 14 days of the workshop will not be eligible for a refund.
